We write to you in your capacity of parents or guardians of the minor to inform you about a research project in which your child is invited to participate. Our intention is to offer you enough accurate information that you can evaluate and decide whether to allow your son/daughter to participate in that study. To do so, please read this information sheet carefully, and we will clarify any remaining doubts you might have afterwards. Naturally, you may also consult any other people you consider appropriate.
VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION
You should know that participation is completely voluntary at all times. For the minor to be able to participate, both the child and their legal representatives must express their acceptance and active willingness. Any of the parties may decide at any moment not to participate and to withdraw their consent.
DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH
The study is to assist the research of the Dental Anthropology Group at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH)(Paseo Sierra de Atapuerca 3, 09002, Burgos).
Participation by the minor shall consist of donating their milk tooth or teeth (deciduous teeth) and furnishing a series of data which are set out on the accompanying form. The information obtained will be used for important research in the paleoanthropological and forensic fields. We gather these data for our inquiries into the dentition of extinct species of interest for taxonomy, phylogeny, development and evolutionary scenarios. In particular, we collect the personal data for the following purposes:
- Research into the external and internal morphological characterization (enamel and dentin) of the teeth using the techniques of micro- computed axial tomography (microCT).
- Studies of the pathologies suffered by extinct human populations, where the interest lies not only in their conditions of health or illness, but also in how this relates to the behavior and degree of ecological adaptation of these populations.
- Investigation into the development pattern of dental histology and studies of sexual dimorphism.
YOUR PARTICIPATION
To make the donation, the minor must attend, accompanied by a parent, guardian or legal representative, the CENIEH or any of the centers or institutions collaborating in the collection project.
After reading this document (Participant Information Sheet) carefully, please complete the Data Sheet as accurately as possible and sign the Informed Consent Form, which latter documents must be handed in with the teeth to the person responsible for the collection.
In exchange for their collaboration, the minor will receive an honorary diploma from the CENIEH, distinguishing the boy/girl as a member of the Ratón Pérez Research Assistant Team.
LEGAL DATA PROTECTION NOTICE
As provided for in the data protection regulations, you consent to the processing of your personal data and the results of the studies conducted in an activity record entitled Research Studies, whose purpose is to obtain significant information for future scientific studies in both the paleoanthropological and forensic fields as set out in the Description of the Research section hereof. The legal grounds for the processing of the data shall be the consent furnished in this document itself.
Access to the personal data shall be restricted to the person responsible for the research team when necessary to verify the data and procedures of the study, and who will at all times maintain them in the strictest confidence as required by current legislation (Act 14/2007 on Biomedical Research, and complementary regulations).
The data collected for the study shall be identified with a code and only the person responsible for the research team and the Consorcio CENIEH can relate these data to you. Therefore, your identify will not be revealed to anybody.
The data provided shall be retained throughout the relationship entered into with the CENIEH or for the period necessary to comply with the legal obligations. Data shall not be transferred to third parties except where required by law, and you may lodge any complaint with the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (www.aepd.es).
