The origins of the Ratón Pérez collection are to be found in the educational workshops that began to be given at the CENIEH for the schools of Burgos. During the 2011-2012 academic year, more than 750 infant and primary school children from fifteen schools in the capital of Burgos passed through the CENIEH to learn about the teeth of modern humans and fossils, as well as basic notions of oral health.

The workshop, framed within the initiative The city also teaches of the Municipal Institute of Culture of Burgos City Council and with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), consisted of a friendly and practical explanation of basic dental anatomy, the differences and similarities between fossil and modern teeth, and given the age of the participants, the difference between temporary and permanent dentition was also explained, ending with an emphasis on the importance of dental hygiene.
